Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam โ an annual obligation on every Muslim whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold. The rate is 2.5% of your total Zakatable assets minus liabilities, calculated on wealth held for one lunar year.
Assets that are Zakatable include cash, gold, silver, investments, business stock, and receivables. Your personal home, car, furniture, and clothing are exempt. Most scholars recommend using the silver Nisab threshold as it is lower and includes more people in the obligation.
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is equivalent to 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value fluctuates with metal prices.
